Hotel Okinawa by Greg Girard

Hotel Okinawa

Japan's southernmost prefecture, Okinawa, hosts a concentration of US military bases unlike anywhere outside the continental US. More than half the 50,000 US troops stationed in Japan are based here. On the main island of Okinawa nearly 20% of the land is occupied by these bases. Until 1972 Okinawa was administered by the United States, and the legacy of those years, plus the continued large footprint of the bases, means that the social and physical landscape is uniquely shaped by this relationship with the US military.

Hotel Okinawa, photographed between 2008 and 2016, looks at the complexities of this relationship, and the unique worlds on base and off that have been created as a result. The title refers to the notion that Okinawa, caught between larger, more powerful forces, has long had to "accommodate" outsiders. A circumstance which continues today.
